An Israeli Defense Force (IDF) soldier involved in the alleged rape of a Palestinian detainee has publicly stated that military police interrogators showed support for their actions rather than conducting a serious investigation.
On July 29, investigators from the IDF’s Military Police Corps raided the Sde Teiman detention center to arrest soldiers suspected of serious sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee. The raid, which led to a heated argument between soldiers and Military Police, was meant to execute an arrest warrant for 10 soldiers involved in guarding detainees from the Gaza Strip.
The raid, ordered by Chief Military Advocate General Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, was in response to the disturbing reports of severe abuse inflicted on a detainee, who was reportedly brought to a hospital showing signs of trauma to his anus. The detainee was allegedly subjected to severe mistreatment at Sde Teiman three weeks before his hospitalization. But in an interview with Israeli journalist Israel Frey, Meir Ben Shatrit, one of the accused IDF soldiers, revealed that the interrogation of the police was a mere formality. “You feel they want to thank you,” Ben Shatrit stated. “There were days when they applauded us.”
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir acknowledged that conditions at Sde Teiman have “indeed worsened” over time. However, rather than offering an apology or committing to reform, Ben-Gvir is publicly celebrating these revelations.
“I am proud of that,” Ben-Gvir said in full support of the abuse Palestinian prisoners are having to endure. Ben-Gvir also denounced the raid and labeled it as a disgraceful act against Israeli soldiers.
“The spectacle of Military Police officers coming to arrest our best heroes at Sde Teiman is nothing less than shameful,” said Ben-Gvir, whose ministry controls the Israel Police and Israel Prison Service.
Adding to the controversy, the wife of one of the soldiers accused of raping and anally sodomizing the detainee dismissed the severity of the allegations in a disturbing statement to the Israeli media. “What do I care about his a–?” she remarked, further asserting that she and her husband “feel threatened” by the ongoing legal proceedings.
A former speechwriter for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also suggested on Israeli television that the Palestinian prisoners at Sde Teiman might have raped themselves.
“First, we didn’t know what happened or didn’t happen in this incident. I would not rule [out] the option that the terrorists harmed each other, did to one another the filthy acts that they are used to or are educated to do,” the speechwriter said in a short video clip of his interview uploaded on X.
